As the daughter of a Basque father and a Mexican mother, and raised in the rural town of Elko, Nevada, Mariluz Garcia grew up with a deep understanding of hard work, community, and the transformative power of education. These early experiences instilled in her a lifelong commitment to public service. Her work is guided by the belief that every family, regardless of background, deserves access to opportunity and a high quality of life.

As a parent navigating the foster care and adoption system, Mariluz saw first-hand how complex and under-resourced many support systems can be—especially for working families, single parents, and caregivers seeking essential services like childcare, healthcare, and behavioral health. That personal experience fuels her advocacy on the Washoe County Commission where she has championed increased access to mental health care, improved public safety, expanded parks and open spaces, promoted community revitalization, supported libraries, and advocated for affordable and supportive housing.
